George Morrell

George Morrell died October 16th from complications of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia at Naples Community Hospital, Naples, Florida.

George was predeceased by his son Benjamin George Morrell. He is survived by his devoted wife, Yvelisse Chase Morrell and his loving family, his daughter, Erika Katherine Morrell; his stepdaughter, Ashley Caroline Chase; his sister, Carolyn Morrell Ojamaa and her husband Ty; his nephew James Ojamaa Daino and her husband Vincent.

George was a 1964 graduate of Matawan Regional High School in New Jersey where he exceeded in baseball and football. He earned a Master’s in Horticulture Degree from Clemson University.

After graduation, George moved to the Atlanta area and started his business career in landscape contracting. In 1989, George formed The Morrell Group, Inc. a premier landscape management company with five divisions and employing over 200. His company achieved national recognition winning numerous industry awards.

George was very active in professional organizations and one of the founders of MALTA (Urban Ag Council) in Atlanta and volunteered his time and company’s services to charitable causes including the Ronald McDonald House Charities. He sold his business in 1999 and eventually was acquired by Valleycrest Companies where he served as a Vice President until his retirement. Even in retirement, George continued to mentor younger associates and helped them build their businesses.

George was diagnosed with CLL (Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia) in 1992. The dignity and perseverance he displayed during his long battle with cancer inspired many.

He was an avid golfer and longtime member of Mediterra Country Club in Naples, Florida and St. Ives Country Club in Johns Creek, Georgia. He gave his time selflessly to both landscape programs at his clubs.

Memorial Services will be held at The Club at Mediterra on October 27th at 9:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. and also at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens in Mershon Hall on Sunday, November 4th at 10: 00 a.m.-1: 00 p.m.
