Years during World War II, before returning to the DC Fire
Department. He retired in 1964 and moved his family to Naples,
where he became Assistant Director of the
City of Naples Parks and Recreation Department and
was promoted to Director in 1966. During
his tenure, Fleischman and Lowdermilk Parks were built.
Dan took on the job as Collier County’s first Parks and Recreation
Director in 1972. With little funding, great
Volunteer support and innovative partnerships with the
Collier County School System and community they
added ball fields and tennis courts on school properties
all over the County. Dan and his staff developed summer
camps, opportunities for lessons and the first sports
leagues for women in the County.
Dan volunteered his time and talents with the American
Legion baseball leagues, Naples H.S. Eagles football and baseball
programs and as a Board member of Lely Golf &
Country Club. An avid and talented golfer for more
than 4 decades, Dan hit five hole-in- ones over the
years. His last one was at age 85, years after he lost
his sight to Macular Degeneration. His best friend for
close to 50 years Rollie Rice encouraged Dan to continue
to play golf by guiding him over the course and in 2005
Dan made that miracle shot to the amazement of
those golfers who witnessed the event.
