There are also extended family members, neighbours and friends who remember John for the remarkable man that he was.
Born in the Netherlands, John moved to Canada in 1956. He lived in the lower mainland, Victoria and eventually John and Marie-Louise settled in Lantzville, where he spent the last 35 years of his life. John acted as a school trustee for many years. He also contributed to the Tsow-Tun-Le-Lum Society assisting in a multitude of community programs.
John’s deep spirituality and faith led him to be an important participant at the local Anglican Church. A passionate singer, he particularly enjoyed hymns and often shared his voice spontaneously, bringing joy to those around him. Whether at weddings, funerals, birthdays, or other celebrations, John would often wear costumes to enhance the occasion. He embraced any opportunity to sing, delighting in songs from hymnals and a variety of artists.
John was deeply committed to his annual Salvation Kettle Drive, where he proudly donned his vintage Charles Dickens outfit, standing tall and distinguished as he rang the kettle. Another cause close to his heart was the annual poppy drive, through which he actively supported veterans and their families.
John was a brilliant story-teller and writer who shared stories inspired by his own adventurous spirit with friends and with the community.
John’s incredible spirit and zest for life echo from the beaches of Lantzville. He enjoyed his daily dips and would often say it was these icy swims all year long that kept him youthful. John opened his heart to any and all that wanted to enjoy the beautiful oceanfront and paddling access. Years ago, John established the “Crab Co-op.”- If he wasn’t on board the vessel, pulling traps, he was waiting on the shore, eager to inspect the catch and lend a hand with the boat and engine.
As well, John was immensely proud of the annual Lantzville Polar Bear swim, located on his beachfront. He would don the “Phantom” mask and drum to accompany all the brave souls. John was and will remain an icon in the Lantzville community. He had an amazing number of friends, everyone knew “beach John” in some capacity.
John had an innate ability to know when someone needed an ear. He was always there to listen and be understanding of the trials and tribulations of life. His wisdom was profound and delivered with respect and love. We can all be thankful for John showing us the deep kindness, selflessness, acceptance and simplicity that he lived by.
John was an inspiration and someone whose vivacious laugh & Dutch spirit will be remembered for a long time to come.
