Elizabeth (Betty) Stone of Nanaimo, BC, went home to the Lord on Monday, February 6, 2023, at the age of 78 years. Born in Victoria on April 12, 1944, the second of four children to Annie and Alex Gray, Betty lived on Vancouver Island for her whole life, settling in Nanaimo in 1967. As a wife, a mom, and a grandma she could always be found sewing, knitting, or quilting something for a loved one or someone in need. Never content being idle, Betty was a member of both the Christian Motorcycle Association and the Goldwing Association for many years. She travelled with both groups to many places throughout Canada and the United States. Betty also volunteered for many years with the Nanaimo Alliance Church, the Salvation Army, and various other organizations around the island. After her retirement from Canada Post, she became an active member of the Nanaimo’s Quilters Guild where she made many friends and completed beautiful blankets many are still enjoying today.
In her youth Betty enjoyed annual trips on the family boat, camping, swimming and square-dancing. She swam regularly and competed with her high school swim. Beach-combing was always a passion and she loved to collect shells, feathers, and beach glass. Her family was very important to her, and Betty travelled across Canada to take part in special family events.
Her family will remember her for her obsession with purple, for her collection of angels, for her love of the ocean, and for her heart to help and give. Betty is survived by Bruce, her husband of 31 years; daughters Lisa (Jeff) and Launa (Mike); grandchildren Laurel (Brandon), Kimberley (Hank), Samantha (Nathan), and Joshua (Mackenzie); seven great-grandchildren: Lacey, Izabel, Evelyn, Bo, James, Carson, and Emerson; her brother David (Sally); her sister Dorothy; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family would like to thank the staff of Eden Gardens in Nanaimo for their care and support of Betty in her last years. A celebration of life will be held in the summer of 2023. Please contact the family for more details.
