Winfred Woodard, 89, of Chireno passed away peacefully in Jacksonville, TX, Monday evening, February 19, 2018. He was born to Jim and Bedell Woodard on June 22, 1928, in Colmesneil, TX, along with twin brother, Wilfred, who passed away when they were six months old. At the age of seventeen, Winfred joined U S Army Air Force, serving his country for twenty years, retiring November 1, 1966. Upon returning to Chireno, he began a second career working for the County of Nacogdoches, as well as ranching part time. After retirement he and his wife, Martha, enjoyed traveling across the country, making several trips to Alaska. In his later years, he enjoyed morning coffee with friends at the Chireno café. He was a member of the Chireno Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.
He is survived by daughter, Barbara Woodard Balch, of Jacksonville, TX, and son, Kenneth Woodard, of Nacogdoches, TX; grandchildren: Jillian Balch Dublin and husband, Dean of Jacksonville, Marcie Balch Splann and husband Kyle of Nacogdoches, Blake Balch and wife Janel of Geneva, Switzerland; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by: his wife of 54 years, Martha Metteauer Woodard, parents and step mother, Vernie Woodard, step sister Billie Wells, and son-in-law, Allan Balch.
Services will be held 10:00 Saturday morning at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel in Nacogdoches, TX with Bro. Mike Belgard, officiating, with interment to follow at the Lower Chireno Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday evening from 5 to 7 o’clock at Cason Monk-Metcalf. Serving as pallbearers: Blake Balch, Dean Dublin, Kyle Splann, Jackson Dublin, Derek Martin, and Charles Humpherys. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lower Chireno Cemetery, Chireno, TX 75937, or American Cancer Society, 1301 South Broadway, Tyler, TX 75701.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff and volunteers at Angelina House, Jacksonville, and Heart to Heart Hospice of Tyler for the wonderful care and friendship given to Winfred.
