William (Bill) H. McWhorter, Jr., 86, of Nacogdoches, TX, beloved husband of Shirley Jo Whitton McWhorter, peacefully passed away at home with Shirley by his side on Sunday, December 11, 2022, in Nacogdoches. He was born to William H. and Cora McWhorter on July 14, 1936, in Waxahachie, TX. Bill was married to Shirley Whitton McWhorter on August 25, 1959, in Nacogdoches, TX at First Baptist Church.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Shirley; son, William Bradley McWhorter and wife, Carie of Nacogdoches, TX; daughter, Marla McWhorter Allen, and husband Greg Allen of Flower Mound, TX; 9 grandchildren: Mallory Richardson and Will McWhorter of Nacogdoches, TX, Morgan Lyons, Reed Lyons, Reece Lyons and Lyla Allen, all of Flower Mound, TX, Clayre Turner and husband Daniel of Plano, TX, Amy Allen of Dallas, TX, Joel Allen of Culver City, CA; brother-in-law Rob Hewlett and wife Shirley of Austin, TX, and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Cora McWhorter and father and mother-in-law, Clyde and Vera Whitton, brother, William Wallace McWhorter, sisters Nadine Pursley and Buanita Jones, and sister-in-law Carol Whitton Hewlett. Bill loved and delighted in his wonderful family and made each of them feel loved and valued.
Bill faithfully loved and served the Lord and was a member of First Baptist Church in Nacogdoches, TX for 52 years. He served the church in many capacities: as a deacon, youth and college leader, Sunday School teacher, long time choir member and committee member for various church projects. He was an active member of the community as an attorney and adjunct professor at Stephen F. Austin State University.
Bill proudly served his country from 1959 to 1970 as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army. He graduated from Baylor University with a music degree, then later, from the University of Texas with a law degree. In his free time, he enjoyed spending time on his farm working with his cows, singing Barbershop, flying his airplane and traveling in his RV with Shirley and friends. He also loved spending time with his family and attending his grandchildren’s extracurricular events and birthday parties. He will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him, especially his family, of whom he was very proud. Bill’s giving heart was well known among his family and friends and around the community.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2022, at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church, 411 North Street, Nacogdoches, TX. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 5127 North Street, Nacogdoches, TX. A visitation will take place Friday, December 16, 2022, from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at the Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Home, 5400 North Street, Nacogdoches, TX.
