Steven Eugene Wingate, 53, of Palestine passed away Friday, March 9, 2018, at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. He was born January 16, 1965, in Nacogdoches to parents Gene and Ruth (Falkner) Wingate.
Steven, or “Bubba” as he was best known, was a graduate of Garrison High School. He worked in many different fields such as carpentry and the poultry industry before finding his true calling in 2007 as a correctional officer. Employed at the Beto Unit in Tennessee Colony, Texas, Bubba was a hard worker who was very proud of his job. Some of his hobbies were fishing, baseball card collecting, and following his favorite sports teams, the Houston Astros and the Dallas Cowboys in particular.
Mr. Wingate was preceded in death his maternal grandparents; paternal grandmothers; sister-in-law, Alice Wingate; and nephew, Michael Wingate.
He is survived by his paternal grandfather, Earnest Wingate; parents, Gene and Ruth Wingate; brother, Michael Wingate and wife Cindy; sisters, Susan Wingate and Deborah Newman; nieces, Rebecca Gott and husband Adam; Rachel Higginbotham and husband Hunter; Destiny Hickingbottom and husband Brian; nephews, Jeremy Wingate and wife Alisha; Kenneth Wingate; and Bobby Cartlidge.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 17, 2018, at Bethel Cemetery in Appleby officiated by Bro. James Edwards.
Serving as pallbearers will be some of his friends and some of his fellow correctional officers from the Beto Unit in Tennessee Colony.
Friends and family are invited to a visitation from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Friday, March 16, 2018, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors, located at 5400 North Street in Nacogdoches.
Memorial donations may be made in Mr. Wingate’s name to The American Cancer Society.
