Stephen Henry Spies 83, passed away on March 8, 2025, in Nacogdoches Medical Center. He will be inurned in Sunset Memorial Cemetery with his family.
Stephen was born June 10, 1941, in Nacogdoches at Memorial Hospital to Charles Earl Spies and Laverne Cade Spies. Both of her parents preceded him in death. Also, a brother, Charles Harris (Blue) Spies and his wife Sherry preceded him in death.
Stephen was religious and wanted to be a preacher or a missionary, however, these plans did not materialize. He did share his faith with the people he came in contact with. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Nacogdoches. His favorite scriptures from the Bible were the 23rd Psalm, John 3:16 and The Lord’s Prayer from Matthew 6:9.
Stephen attended Nacogdoches High School and graduated from Central Heights High School. Stephen was an avid sports fan. He knew most of the players’ and coaches’ names. His favorite team was the Texas Longhorns. Stephen had been disabled for about 30 years, but before that time he and a lady friend attended all the SFA home games. After he had two back surgeries and several total knee replacements, he watched games on TV. Before Stephen became disabled, Stephen worked in the chemical department of Texas Instruments for 4 ½ years, then he worked at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital for a while in Physical Therapy and X-ray, and lastly, he worked at the Security National Bank (now Regions) in Nacogdoches for 7 years.
Stephen’s survivors include several cousins in Nacogdoches, Dallas, Beaumont, Plano, San Augustine and Irving, Texas. Also surviving is a special friend, Dorothy (Dot) Franks Dornak of Nacogdoches, who always went to the ball games with him.
Honorary pallbearers were all of Stephen’s doctors and their office staff, together with other friends and relatives.
Stephen requested that no one send memorials of donations in his memory. Thank you and God bless.
Arrangements are under the direction of Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors.
