Funeral service for Paul Henry Spencer, 78, of Nacogdoches will be Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014, at 2:30 p.m. in the Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel with the Rev. John Spurgeon officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
Mr. Spencer passed away peacefully at his home in Nacogdoches County on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2014. He was born May 13, 1936, in Douglass, Texas, to William Henry “Bill” Spencer and Lena Goodman Spencer.
Paul grew up in Douglass, Texas, and worked side-by-side with his parents in their family business. He worked for many years in Nacogdoches for N.W. Smith, Will Kendrick, and Mike Perry motor companies. He was co-owner of Spencer-Layton Wrecker Service. Paul became a broiler farmer in the late 1970’s and was named a top grower for Pilgrim’s Pride on several occasions. He was a dreamer, a builder, and an innovator. He was hardworking and a very talented designer of machinery and equipment. He sought ways to make life easier for others. He could repair or build just about anything, and his expertise was highly valued by those who knew him. He was a mechanic, farmer, and rancher who loved his family and put them before all other things.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Billy Walters. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and is survived by his wife, Marcil Wilburn Spencer of Nacogdoches; daughter, Lisha Spencer of Rusk; grandson, Matthew Tyler of Nacogdoches; grandson, Joshua Tyler and wife, Mary, of Kilgore; granddaughter, Allison Whitton of College Station; great-granddaughter, Abigail Olivia Tyler of Kilgore; sister, Billie Walters of Nacogdoches; sister-in-law, Shirley Bishop and husband, Ken, of Nacogdoches; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Pallbearers will be Henry Touchette, Bob Owens, Robert Wilson, James Bishop, Jon Bishop, and Noe Foxworth. Honorary pallbearers will be LaTina Watts, Jennifer Rudisill, Paula Horton, Veronica Danielson, Mechelle Roberts, and Stephanie Driver, who provided many hours of care and compassion for Mr. Spencer.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Brenda Johnson, RN; W.E. Furniss, MD, and his staff; Heart to Heart Hospice; Texas Home Health; and the caring nursing staff of Nacogdoches Medical Center and Oak Manor Nursing Center.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10 at the funeral home.
