After high school, Larry enlisted and served in The United States Marines. Upon his return to Etoile he began woodworking. Being known as avid woodworker, many of his crafts can be still be seen throughout Etoile. He retired from Etoile ISD as the head of the maintenance department. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. Larry was known for helping people, and he spent many years as an EMT and firefighter at the Etoile Volunteer Fire Department. He also served on the Etoile Water Board.
Mr. Atkinson was preceded in death by his parents; and cousin, Richard “Dick” Lusk.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Atkinson; son, Jeffrey Atkinson; daughter, Crystal Sowell and husband Michael; grandchildren, Stephen Harris, Aerielle Atkinson and wife Leti Beau, Heather Harris, Cheryl Atkinson, Luna Sowell, Chloe Sowell, Rhett Gordon, and Kelsey Gordon; sister, B.J. Noble; cousins, Jan Lusk and Diane Morton Lowery; and many more nieces and nephews.
Friends and family are invited to a visitation from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 15, 2021, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Home, 5400 North Street in Nacogdoches. Graveside services will follow at 11:45 a.m. at Blue Springs Cemetery in Etoile officiated by Pastor Mark Green.
Serving as pallbearers will be Pacer Johnson, Andy Sanders, Ricky Burnaman, Ricky Stacks, Shane Amen, and Jody Lowery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors, Nacogdoches.
