James grew up with three siblings running the red clay fields of San Augustine, TX. Always the prankster, he would play tricks on his sisters, Jackie and Leah Faye. Walking home after going to the theatre on Saturdays, he would run ahead and hide in the cemetery, scaring them as they passed. They would run all the way home screaming!
James’ love of sports would play a major role in his life. Excelling in all sports in high school, he received a full scholarship in all sports at Pineville College in Pineville, LA. He set records in both high school and college. He continued his love of sports by coaching girls’ softball and boy’s Little League.
He spent the majority of his career employed by the Firestone Chemical Plant and retired as the Superintendent of the Butadiene Unit. He and Jean always devoted their lives to Christian causes; whether in their local church, volunteering to Builders for Christ or with the Gideons. Jim enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing, and sports.
James is survived by his loving wife, Billie Jean of 43 years; his daughter, Sherry Coward; daughter, Terry Fortenberry and husband, Buddy; son, James Brent Newberry and wife, Kay. He will be missed by eight grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, along with nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
He is preceded in death by parents, Vaughn Booker and Hattie Mae Newberry; brother, Charles Newberry; sisters, Leah Faye Lyon and Jackie Hedgspeth Duggins; and granddaughter, Elaena Fanese Swanton.
