Gerald “Lynn” Black, 78, left this world on September 15, 2021 in Nacogdoches TX. Lynn was born in Evadale, TX on August 17, 1943, the seventh of seven children, to James Albert Black and Mary Ola Bunch. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business from Stephen F. Austin then worked a variety of jobs before finding a career in the postal service, from which he and his wife Nancy retired in 2008.
Lynn's life was guided by his faith in the Lord. He obeyed the gospel in 1966 then preached at various East Texas churches of Christ until his health failed in 2015. Afterwards, he devoted his time to Bible study and private teaching.
Lynn is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Nancy Worley Black of Nacogdoches; his sons Noel Black of Rutledge TN, Wayne Black of Onalaska TX, and David Black of Idaho Springs ID; his daughter Phylis Diana Black of Colorado Springs CO; his brother Terry Black, and his sister Barbara Ann Black. Lynn is predeceased by his father and mother, three brothers and one sister.
Lynn enjoyed public speaking, photography, community theatre, singing, acting, thrifting, writing poetry, and he had a passion for cats. Lynn was a lover of literature and a voracious reader, and spent many contented hours reading aloud to his wife and children, a particularly treasured memory of his children. Lynn was also a Distinguished Toastmaster and participated in the Nacogdoches Lamplight Theatre. Lynn was selfless, a man of dignity, and a handyman extraordinaire. He loved his family, always had a joke ready, and always ate dessert first. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 21st at Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Home in Nacogdoches at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lupus Research Alliance.
