Evelyn Hall Nichols, 84, of Nacogdoches, Texas, passed away Monday, July 26, 2010, in Temple, Texas. Evelyn was the daughter of Marcus and Lola Hall. She was born August 4, 1925, in Dublin, Georgia. She was a long time resident of Nacogdoches, Texas.
Mrs. Nichols graduated from Dublin, Georgia High School with honors. She obtained her B.S. Degree from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, Georgia, in 1945. She earned her Master’s Degree from Stephen F. Austin State University in 1966.
Mrs. Nichols’ first job was working for the National Tuberculosis Association. She met her future husband while working for the TB Association. Evelyn and James were married on September 1, 1948. She and her husband moved to Nacogdoches in 1950 after he accepted a position as a Professor of history at S.F.A. Several years later she began her teaching career at Nacogdoches High School teaching History, English, and Science. Mrs. Nichols taught at the Nacogdoches Adult Learning Center where she also contributed several newspaper articles to encourage literacy.
Mrs. Nichols was the sponsor for the Junior Historian Chapter and supervised students in the writing of articles for the Junior Historian, a publication sponsored by the Texas Historical Association. The students won second place in state competition three years in succession.
Mrs. Nichols was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She cherished her church circle friends. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was an avid reader, enjoyed keeping up with current events, crocheting, and playing bridge with dear friends. Mrs. Nichols will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Surviving her are daughters; Becky Fortenberry and husband Jeff of Waco, Texas, and Marianne Nichols and husband Terry of Cushing, Texas; Daughter-in-law, Jackie Nichols of Houston, Texas; Grandchildren who lovingly knew her as “Bambi,” Marcus Nichols, Blair Nichols, Brian Nichols and wife Heather, Seth Fortenberry and wife Megan, Nicole Spanos and husband Chris, Michelle Oliver and husband Zach, and Justin Nichols; four great-grandchildren; sisters; Trixie Mercer of Dublin, Georgia, and Lynn Rowe of Columbus, Georgia; and special friend, Bebe Brandon.
Mrs. Nichols was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James Hale Nichols Jr.; and son, Mark Nichols.
Graveside service will be held Friday, July 30, 2010 at 9:30 am at Sunset Memorial Park. Memorial service will be held Friday, July 30, 2010, at 10:30 am at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Bill Gandin officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm, Thursday, July 29, 2010, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors.
