Ellis Lavon Layton was born August 7, 1943, in the Chireno Community, Nacogdoches County, Texas, the son of Ellis Taylor Layton and Rena (Murray) Layton. He passed away on December 23, 2024 in Nacogdoches, Texas. He was 81 years of age.
Ellis attended school in both Chireno and Shelbyville. He soon moved his family to Arlington and Wichita Falls where they lived for a number of years. He moved back to Nacogdoches some 30 years ago to be closer to his mother, prior to her passing.
Mr. Layton sold insurance and has continued to serve his customers his whole life. In fact, he worked his whole life and had very little time to do anything else. When he did have free time, he enjoyed watching the Texas Rangers and the Oilers being an old fan of Bum Phillips. At one point in his life, he decided to teach himself how to play the guitar to the chagrin of others.
He is survived by his wife, Alice of Nacogdoches, one daughter, Regina and husband James Rogers, and one son, Clinton and his wife Tina, all of Cushing, one brother, Jewel Richard Layton and his wife Mary Sue of Center, one sister, Bonita Burch of Nacogdoches, and his grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ellis Taylor Layton, Rena Murray Layton Burch and Burford Burch.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, December 28th in the Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Home Chapel at 11:00 a.m. The time of Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until service time. Bro. David Snelson will officiate. Interment will be held in the Upper Chireno Cemetery following services.
