Doris was born on August 9, 1938, in Grapeland, Texas to Roderick and Edwina Gates. She grew up and went to high school in Bay City, Texas, graduating in 1957. She met and married the love of her life, Johnny Layton, in Houston, Texas.
Mrs. Layton worked as a bookkeeper at HL&P and was part-owner of Layton’s Grocery. She enjoyed crocheting and reading, cooking, and spending time with her grandbabies.
Doris was preceded in death by her father, Roderick Gates; mother, Edwina Baker; stepmother, Annie Gates Miller; brother, Joe Gates; grandson, Smokey Hebert; and special aunts, LaVerne Henderson and Vonita Droddy.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Johnny Lee Layton; son, Johnny Layton, Jr. and wife Rose; daughter, Carole Markham; grandchildren, Charlie Abshier, Chris Abshier and wife Ashley, and Amber DeLeon and husband Rick; great-grandchildren, Kyrsten Hunter and husband Austin, Madison Abshier, Clayton Abshier, Kristen Seidler and husband Sean, Devin Hebert and wife Victoria, and Ethan Hebert and wife Leslye; great-great-grandchildren, Keiran Seidler and Isla Seidler; sisters, Frances McEntire and husband Larry, Glenda Currie and husband Jack, Laura Evans and husband Steve, Karen Trobl and husband Jimmy; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends and family are invited to a visitation from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel in Nacogdoches. Funeral Services will follow at 2:00 pm. Mrs. Layton will be laid to rest in Upper Chireno Cemetery.
