Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, March 7, at Corinth Primitive Baptist Church in Appleby, Texas, with Elder John Horner officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Nacogdoches County.
Dennis Wayne Wankan was born the son of Joe Norman Wankan and Ettie Jho Commander on Dec. 1, 1945, in Nacogdoches County. Mr. Wankan retired from the City of Lufkin as Superintendent of Water Production. He was a member of Texas Water Utilities Association for 30 years. He was director of Deep East Texas Region of Antique Automobile Club of America and a member of East Texas Classic Car Club. Dennis loved to show his car at various car shows and to fellowship with his friends. He was an avid hunter and loved taking his grandson Wyatt hunting. After retiring, Dennis enjoyed working from time to time with his son, Dwayne. Dennis loved the church and attended every chance he could. He was a Deacon of Corinth Primitive Baptist Church for over 35 years.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Stanaland Wankan, to whom he was married March 11, 1967; children: son and daughter-in-law, Dwayne and Laura Wankan of Lufkin; daughter, Wendy Marlo Wankan of Seattle, Washington; grandsons, Wyatt Wankan and Gus Wankan, both of Lufkin; granddaughter, Rilee Wankan of Lufkin; mother and step-father, Ettie Jho and Thurman Berryhill of Nacogdoches; step-sister, Diane Clark and husband Jeff of Nacogdoches; and a nephew, Jody Clark of Nacogdoches, brother-in-law Porter Stanaland and wife Carol and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Wankan was preceded in death by his father, Joe Norman Wankan.
Pallbearers will be: Ronnie Williamson, Kenneth Leach, Dee Scarborough, Matt Stanaland, Lenvel Stanaland, and Jeff Clark. Honorary pallbearers will be Darnell Lynch, Floyd Long, and all the Antique Car Club members.
Visitation will be held Saturday, March 6, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel at 5400 North Street in Nacogdoches.
