Carlton attended St. Mary’s Catholic School for the first eight grades then transferred to public school, Woodrow Wilson Junior High School. He graduated from Port Arthur Independent School District’s Thomas Jefferson High School.
After graduation, he was employed at Texaco Refinery, Inc., in 1948. At that time, jobs at the refineries were open to high school graduates and many of Carlton’s friends joined him in this adventure until the U.S. Army drafted him for the Korean War. He was stationed in Columbia, South Carolina, at Fort Jackson where he married his girlfriend from Port Arthur, Martha George, during the beginning of his Army assignment. His next assignment took him to Texas for training then to Camp Attabury, Indiana. During this time, Carlton served his country assigned to the Intelligence Department of the Army. He was discharged in February 1953 and returned to his employment with Texaco, Inc., in Port Arthur, Texas.
Carlton was involved in many community action activities. He served as Chairman of the Texaco Baseball Team, President of Texaco Credit Union for twelve years, president of the Little League for three years, involved in the City of Groves community serving as Chair or Member of action committees. After relocating to Nacogdoches in 1986, he joined the Evening Lions Club and served in action committees. He was an active member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Carlton and Martha’s son Britt J. Labbit lives in Nacogdoches with his family, Tammy, Nicolas and Samantha. Presently Nicolas is a lawyer practicing in Longview and Samantha is attending Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.
Carlton is survived by his wife, Martha George Labbit; son and daughter-in-law, Britt J. and Tammy Labbit; grandson, Nicolas J. Labbit; and granddaughter, Samantha Labbit; also several nieces and nephews in Texas.
Carlton passed away Friday, October 23, 2015, at his residence.
Services are set for 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 27, 2015, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, located at 2508 Appleby Sand Road in Nacogdoches, Texas, with Monsignor James E. Young officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery, located on Lanana Street.
