She was born on November 30, 1923 in Henderson, Texas and was the only child of Luther and Faye Alexander of Pinehill, Texas. She graduated from Henderson High School and obtained her undergraduate degree from Stephen F. Austin University in 1958. In 1960 she proudly achieved her Master’s Degree in Education. She used her education to teach first grade for twenty-seven years at Raguet Elementary in Nacogodoches and during that time she touched many of the lives of her students.
Billie Jo married Elmer Childers who was Food Service Director at Stephen F. Austin University, and they enjoyed 59 years of marriage. He preceded her in death in 2003. Family was her greatest joy. She is survived by her sons Henry and wife Henri T. of Houston and John of Longview; and daughter Carol Ansel and husband Kirby of Houston; grandsons, Kelly Childers and wife Shawna and their daughters Veda and Ruby of Kansas, Alex Childers and wife Tara and their son Campbell and their daughter Tinsley of San Antonio, Clark Ansel and wife Brooke of Dallas, and Kyle Ansel of Avon, CO.
She lived at The Buckingham in Houston for 11 years which was filled with joy and happiness. She never missed an opportunity to participate in the many activities they offered. She was a friend to all, loved to laugh, and always had a smile on her face.
Trips to visit Elmer and Billie Jo in Nacogdoches were always special. There were outings to the lake along with good food and conversation on the patio.
Billie Jo and Elmer were active members of First Baptist Church while living in Nacogdoches.
The family would like to thank her caretakers at The Buckingham and Delores Gipson in Nacogdoches for their exceptional care.
A private graveside service and burial will take place on Friday, April 24, 2020, at Sunset Memorial Park in Nacogdoches with Pastor Emeritus Dr. Allen Reed officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Nacogdoches, 411 North Street, Nacogdoches, TX 75961.
