Kirby was born to Kirby McMillan and Annie Pearl McMillan in East New York, Brooklyn on June 20, 1955. Kirby was raised by Frank Harris. Kirby always had an adventurous and business minded spirit. At the age of 9 years old he purchased a shoeshine kit, and he would take the subways to Wall Street and shine shoes. He said that business allowed him the freedom to buy his own clothing since he wasn’t too thrilled with the fashions his mom chose.
Kirby graduated from Eli Whitney Vocational high School. He started running in track meets at an early age and still holds a few unbroken track records. Under the tutelage of coach Joe Carpenter and teammates with whom he was in weekly contact with until his passing Kirby held the record for the Cross Country 2.5-mile event at Brooklyn’s Prospect Park with a time of 13:11. Another record was for the indoor 880 yard run in 1972 with a time of 2:01. A track highlight was that he had been able to compete in Madison Square Garden.
Kirby enlisted into the Navy on May 23, 1974, where he held a variety of positions while continuing to run track for the Navy track team to include assistant coach duties. He attended the Olympic training Center in Colorado Springs in1980 in the 400- and 800-meter relays. While in the Navy he was a submariner serving on the USS Parche (a highly classified mission), a Navy recruiter, a chef, and several other positions. He participated in Desert Storm, and the liberation of Kuwait. Kirby retired from the Navy on May 31, 1994.
Since retirement from the Navy he has worked as a civilian for the Navy, the Army Corps of Engineers and Dept of Housing and Urban Development in various real estate and auditing capacities.
Kirby achieved a bachelor’s degree in marketing management from Park University. He holds dual associate degrees in real estate and liberal Arts and also holds a current California State Real Estate License.
Although he may have been lured from grade school and high school daily activities by various non-classroom adventures (because he reveled in having fun), he loved to learn about everything. (Many of his classmates with whom he was in constant contact with will wholeheartedly agree to his escapades.) While pursuing his day job he was taking an online Spanish class (doing well), he helped raise Alpacas, Llamas, and Black Angus beef cattle with his wife, Michele on their small ranch. He had been a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, the Red Cross deploying to upstate NY after hurricane Sandy 2012, the Special Olympics in 2019 as a golf coach, and baseball coach (before the pandemic hit). He went to Louisiana after hurricane Katrina and served there for 3 months with the HUD disaster team. There was so much to Kirby McMillan, he was an incredible, one-of-a-kind man. He was deeply spiritual thanking the Lord everyday for all he had and could see. His loves were all connected by the Lord, family, friends, music, nature, his beloved dogs, black history, native American history, great seafood and much, much more.
Kirby is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Michele, his daughter Zantea and her husband, his son Demetrius, his son David and his wife, his brothers, Kenneth, Kevin, and Keith, his three granddaughters and one grandson, numerous aunts, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He considered his childhood friends as family, some of whom have been involved in Kirby’s life since first grade, then elementary school and high school. As a matter of fact, he considered all of his friends as family and loved each and every one of you!
May you rest in peace Kirby our beloved and know that you will never be forgotten.
We will be forever grateful to the Lord for allowing us to share in your beautiful soul for as long as we have.
