Nancy was a well of boundless love and generosity, which extended beyond her family to co-workers, friends, and neighbors. She was born in Muncie, Wednesday, February 7, 1934, the daughter of Raymond and Maribell (VanNatter) Shaffer. She was raised by her grandparents, Mary Elizabeth and Clyde Shaffer as one of their own, alongside her aunts and uncles.
Nancy was taught softball by her grandpa. She was drafted into the Professional Women's Softball League and played on the Fort Wayne Daisies team. She was an avid sports fan. Her favorites were the Cubs, IU, Pacers and Colts. Nancy graduated from Royerton High School and attended Ball State University.
Nancy had a successful thirty-eight year career in the Payroll Department at Ball Memorial Hospital alongside her lifelong friends, Mary Ward and Rita Brocki. Nancy never married but she loved children and as the oldest of her generation, she became more of an aunt and grandma figure to her family than a cousin.
She leaves behind, her sister, Marilyn Young; aunt, Betty Daughtery; her special cousins and their families, Mary Beth Campbell, Rev. Robert Opperman, Linda Yokaitis, Rev. William E. Lewis, Janet Shaffer, Clyde Shaffer Sr., Jim Shaffer, Rev. Alan Shaffer, and David Shaffer.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond Shaffer and Maribell Myers; her aunt, M. Lucille Opperman; uncles, Charles Shaffer and William Shaffer and cousin, Larry Shaffer.
Services will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 28, 2018, at Elm Ridge Mausoleum North Chapel, 4600 West Kilgore Avenue, Muncie, Indiana 47304, with Rev. Robert Opperman officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory Cemetery, north of Muncie.
