Melvin Douglas Freeman, 62, of Frankfort, passed away at his home on Sunday, May 16, 2021. He was born on Monday, September 22, 1958, in Detroit, Michigan, the son of the late Ollie D. and Lennie M. (Massengill) Freeman. He married Elizabeth Roe on August 23, 1997, and they celebrated twenty-three years together.
Melvin served in the National Guard from 1979-1991. He was an avid storm watcher, and was fascinated by tornadoes, earthquakes, and hurricanes. He loved making things out of leather, like bull whips and belts. He also loved making things like nun chucks, paddles, and clubs out of wood. He loved The Doors, Petula Clark, REM, Tommy James and the Shondells, Little Anthony and the Imperials, and Loverboy. He enjoyed watching Westerns with John Wayne and Clint Eastwood. He also loved In the Heat of the Night, Walker, Texas Ranger, Beavis and Butthead, The Three Stooges, and Jerry Lewis. He loved his shotguns, and enjoyed whittling and chewing tobacco. He cherished his family, and held on to the hope of one day seeing his Mom and Dad again.
Melvin is survived by his loving wife, Liz Freeman; son, Zachary Roe; daughter, Amy Roe; grandchildren, Ace Roe, Siara Steele, Hailey Windburn, Jayden Windburn, Zoe Cobbs, Ashton Cobbs, Damian Roe, Bryson Roe, and one great-grandchild on the way; brothers, Tom Freeman, and Jason (Joann) Freeman; sisters, Theresa Freeman, and Linda (Glenn) Newnum; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his mother-in-law, Margaret Roe; and several aunts and uncles.
Friends and family may call Thursday, May 20, 2021, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Elm Ridge Funeral Home, 4600 West Kilgore Avenue, Muncie, Indiana 47304.
Services will be held Thursday, May 20, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. at Elm Ridge Funeral Home. Pastor Erwin Early will officiate. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, masks are required as well as social distancing.
Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery in Tazewell, Tennessee, on Saturday, May 22, 2021.
