Rita had been eager to join her husband Marty, the love of her life, in heaven. Over the last few months, she had spoken about this often. It brings great comfort to her family and friends to know she and Marty are together again. As Rita would say "marrying Marty was the best thing I ever did my entire life."
Always an adventurous spirit, she loved to travel and did so often with Marty in the days before visiting culturally exotic places became more commonplace. Being the fun and funny person she was, she loved
to "put on a party" and host her favorite people. She often packed her girlfriends into her Cadillac and
merrily drove them to social engagements and dances. Her sister-in-laws, most of whom predeceased her, became some of her closest girlfriends in life. For Rita, that family and the family of friends from her Greatest Generation counted the most.
Rita Stone was born in Manhattan on Aug. 13, 1929, the daughter of Arthur and Dora (Simon) Stone, who
predeceased her. She was the middle child of five and the only girl in the family, which moved to the
Bronx soon after she was born. In 1952, she married Martin Weinberg, a tall, pipe-smoking veteran of World War II's Battle of the Bulge. They lived happily together with a series of beloved pet dogs until
Marty died prematurely in 1980. A second marriage to Fred Adler ended in divorce.
Rita possessed an incredible work ethic and greatly valued this trait in others as well. A bookkeeper by
profession, she always wanted to make a difference. And she did. First in the garment district and later at
a local accounting firm where she got to work for her "favorite boss". She worked until she was 80.
In addition to her parents, Rita is predeceased by her brothers Bernard, Milton, Irwin and Joseph. She is
survived by more than a dozen nieces and nephews, their spouses and partners, several cousins and
many great-nieces and great nephews.
Rita will always be loved for her sense of humor, her directness and her hugely generous heart. Because
she loved animals and most of all dogs, we ask that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the ASCPA (see link below)
