She was born on January 12, 1926 at the family home in the Goliad, Texas area. Her early childhood was spent in various places across Gonzales and Lavaca counties where the family could find work. They finally settled in the Old Moulton area where, after her mom’s death, she helped her dad raise her younger siblings and also raised her own two sons there.
Maggie enjoyed life to the fullest. Her favorite pastimes, if anyone knew her, was always playing bingo, fishing and being with her family. For the past 20 years her most treasured times were with her grandson Dayton, who was of course the apple of her eye. He gave her the name “Mammie” which came from Maggie and Grannie and from then on she was Mammie to her family. Whether it was the many days she spent in Houston with him as an infant and young child to it being out in the pasture just being a boy with Mammie walking in the creek, she loved spending time with him. There were many afternoons spent trying to catch minnows and grasshoppers to go fishing with. They set out many a time with their rubber boots on and rods in their hands to go fishing in the ponds. She enjoyed teaching him how to catch the “Big One”. She also taught him how to make tortillas and would always remind him not to shoot the pet birds that she fed out in her front yard. Maggie also loved making those delicious tacos for the Trail Rides, reunions and friends, or to send home with her family. She was dedicated to her family as it always came first. Maggie was always willing to lend a helping hand to whomever was in need. In her years after her stroke she spent countless hours in her room coloring with her pencil colors. She lost the use of her right hand from the stroke so she learned to color with her left hand.
Maggie is preceded in death by her parents Bitermo "Pete" and Lucy Garza Mejias, son Tiburcio "Tivo", and all of her siblings. She was the oldest child of 10.
Survivors are her son Daniel “Preacher” Mejias and wife Roberta, grandson Dayton Mejias and granddaughter Katherine "Pinkie" Martinez.
Those attending as pallbearers are Dayton Mejias, Todd Clifton, Louis Stewart, Ben Braeuer, Barton Braeuer and Mike Lockstedt.
