He was born in Arnaudville on June 18, 1939 to the late Victor Albert and Emily Sonnier Bernard. He was a member of St. John Bosco Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and Woodmen of the World. He served in the National Guard as well as making his life as a farmer. He moved to Westlake and was employed at Bulk Transport before becoming a machinist at Conoco Refinery.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Rosa Richard Bernard, two daughters, Roxann Hicks of Gillis and Carlene Fontenot and husband Brent of Westlake; three sons, Kevin Bernard of Belle Chase, Dwayne Bernard and wife A’Dana of Topsy and Andrew Bernard and wife Rebekah of Lake Charles; three brothers, Victor Albert Bernard, Jr. and wife Ruth of New Iberia, Ray Bernard and wife Velma of Ville Platte, and Claude Bernard of Ville Platte; sister, Marie Stoute and husband Jesse of Baker; grandsons, Shane Fontenot (Jennifer), Allen Bernard (Shanna), Bryan Bernard, Wilson “Will” Hicks, Evan Bernard, Gabe Hicks, Ethan Bernard, Sammy Hicks, E.J. Bernard and Earon Bernard; granddaughters, Deidre Romero (Derrick), Corney Bernard, Heather Hicks, Summer Hicks and Emmelia Bernard, 10 great grandchildren and one on the way; 6 step grandchildren and 4 step great grandchildren.
Leo was preceded in death by his brother, Louis Bernard and sister-in-law Ronella Bernard.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John Bosco Catholic Church in Westlake on Monday, October 7, 2019 at 1pm. Father Mike Barras will officiate. Visitation will be Sunday, October 6, 2019 from 3pm until 8pm with a rosary at 6pm led by Deacon Chris Gregory at Hixson Funeral Home of Moss Bluff. Visitation will resume Monday at 9am at the funeral home until time of procession to the church.
