Matt Lawson Smith, age 89, of Mohawk, passed away on Monday, April 4, 2016. He was a member of Mt. Hope United Methodist Church and served in the United States Army. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. His love for life, farming, gardening and hunting will be missed dearly by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lillie Jane West Smith and Charles E. Smith Sr., brother, William Kenner; sisters, Bonnie Pease, Elizabeth Patterson, Addie Booker; a sister who died at an earlier age, Chester; and half-brothers, John and Jim.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Rose Smith; daughters, Cheryl (Doug) Tippins and Carol (James) Black; grandchildren, Amy (Delbert) Baker, Kevin (Kristy) Tippins, and Monique Walker; five great-grandchildren; brother, Charles E. Smith Jr.; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends in the Chapel of Stubblefield Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 6, 2016 from 5 – 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will follow at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. Richard Long and Rev. David Gibbs officiating. Graveside services will be held privately. Pallbearers will be: Kevin Tippins, Bill Smith, Ronald Ray, Leroy Turner, Ronnie Rednour, Martell Bible, Charles Poe, and Allen Lamb.
Services are under the direction of Stubblefield Funeral Home.
