L T Helton, age 77, of Avon IN, formerly of Morristown, passed away on Monday, December 4, 2017. He was born in Morristown on February 16, 1940, to the late Lillard John and Ada Mae Reece Helton. He graduated from Morristown High School in 1959, where he excelled in three sports. He went on to attend The University of Tennessee, where he played both offense and defense on the football team. He received his degree in Education and started his coaching career at UT. He received his graduate degree from East Tennessee State University and was also an assistant football coach. Throughout his 53-season career, he shared his passion for coaching at both the high school and collegiate levels. He was part of two championship teams: ETSU’s Ohio Valley Conference Championship in 1969 and Ben Davis High School’s Indiana State Championship in 2014. Coach Helton, as he was affectionately known, was a mentor, coach and teacher to all the young lives he touched. He always said one of his greatest accomplishments was mentoring and developing young men and women and preparing them for their life ahead. His patience, guidance and devotion will be remembered, loved and respected by all his former players, students and fellow coaches. He was formerly a member of Dover Cumberland Presbyterian Church and currently a member of Kingsway Christian Church in Avon, IN. In addition to his parents, preceding LT in death were his stepmother, Margie Stewart Helton; son-in-law, Mike Wilder; and step-grandson, Jacob John Lenoir. Survivors include his wife, Laura Helton of Avon, IN; children, Pamela Helton (Joe) Kreitz, of Stuart, FL, Larry Helton of London, KY, and Donna Helton Wilder, of Mt Carmel; stepdaughter, Tiffany McNally Lenoir, Franklin, IN; grandchildren, Logan (LaShey) Helton and Kimberlee Helton, all of London, KY; step-grandchildren, Lindsay Lenoir and Sara Lenoir, both of Brownsburg, IN; great-granddaughter, Charlee Helton; step-great-grandson, Lucas Jacob arriving in January 2018; sister, Shirley Helton Lee, of Morristown; and many special nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends in the Chapel of Stubblefield Funeral Home on Monday, December 11 from 5 – 8:00 p.m. with the funeral service following at 8:00 p.m. with Dr. Howard Shipley officiating. Family and friends will meet in Hamblen Memory Gardens on Tuesday morning at 10:45 a.m. for an 11:00 a.m. graveside service.
