Robert was born on June 4, 1933, in Burke County and was the son of the late Roy Lee Caldwell and the late Nannie Etta Bridges Caldwell. In addition to his infant son Robert Garmon Caldwell, Jr, he was preceded in death by brothers Charles Caldwell and Ralph Caldwell, sisters Mary Elizabeth Caldwell, Irene Cline, Barbara Ferguson, Frances Johnson, and Mary Etta Rutherford.
Robert was a lifelong member of Willow Tree AME Church where he gladly served as a deacon, member of the senior choir, trustee board member and road captain. He was a man that truly loved the Lord, and he always made every effort to be in the house of worship. Members of his family looked forward to listening to him sing and play his favorite gospel songs every Sunday morning as he prepared for church.
Robert was a sports enthusiast who loved watching football, basketball, and baseball among other sports. When his son Greg was a young boy, they would sometimes take a chartered bus to Atlanta and stay overnight to watch the Atlanta Braves play baseball. He was also an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and L.A. Lakers fan. He enjoyed fishing and swimming, and he had a great sense of humor. He was humorous, animated, and could imitate the voice of anyone.
Robert retired as a Foreman from Henredon Furniture Industries after thirty-three years of dedicated service. He worked hard during those working years and later enjoyed peaceful retirement years with his family. He was a very loving and supportive husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many.
He married the love of his life Vera, on February 22, 1958, who survives him. Robert is also survived by son Gregory Caldwell and his wife Monica, daughter Norma Caldwell Singletary and her husband Darren, his youngest daughter Doris Caldwell, son Rodney Finger, and daughter Mary Hayden. He leaves behind to celebrate his life and memory grandchildren: Greg II, Jordan, Brandon, McKenzie, Justin, Ryan, and one great-grandson Kylan.
