Jackson “Papa Jack” Finley Poteet, age 84, of Drexel, beloved husband of LaVone Orders Poteet, went to be with the Lord, Friday, March 19, 2010 at Grace Hospital. Jack was born to the late Isaac Finley and Floy Edith Poteet on January 21, 1926, in Burke County. He was retired from Drexel Heritage with over 43 years of service. He defended his country honorably during WWII in the Navy. Jack was a charter member of Amherst Baptist Church, was a devoted Christian and served his Savior as a deacon, trustee and choir member. Jack also served as church treasurer of Amherst for 35 years. Jack was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He will be greatly missed.
In addition to his parents, Jack is preceded in death by a great grandson, Tim, Jr.; three brothers, Troyal Poteet, Justus Poteet, and Norman Poteet; and four sisters, Mary Etta Yarbro, Agnes Clark, Ruth Towery and Robbie Norman.
Jack is survived by his wife of 61 years, LaVone Orders Poteet of the home; a son, Tommy Jackson Poteet and wife, Kaye of Drexel; a daughter Terry Poteet Self of South Hill, VA; a brother, Clyde Poteat of Glen Alpine; a sister, Shirley Murdock of Charlotte; five grandchildren, Travis Poteet and his wife, Stephanie of Drexel, Gretchen Whisnant-Arsalane and her husband, Ali of Chesapeake, VA, Todd Poteet and his wife, Samantha of Oak Hill; Jennifer Whisnant Lambert and her husband, Tim of Stedman, and Sarah Harrison and her husband, Ben of Drexel; seven great grandchildren, Theron, Chloe, Kirsten, Haley, Tanner, Lainey, and Katherine. Jack is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and lots of friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 4:00 P.M. on Sunday, March 21, 2010 at Amherst Baptist Church with Reverend Harold Joplin and Reverend Al Tinnin officiating. Interment will follow at Burke Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM Sunday at the church.
