George Stanley Baker, Sr., 91, of Morganton, died Thursday, September 27, 2012 at Burke Hospice & Palliative Care in Valdese. Born on November 18, 1920 in Burke County, he was the son of the late John Luther Baker and Nora Jane Anderson Baker.
Mr. Baker served in the United States Army, 83rd Infantry Division, during World War II, having received the Bronze Star Medal. He was active in his family genealogy and was the author of Reep-Baker-Dysart-Patton-Anderson Family History.
Mr. Baker was loved and cherished by his family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathryn Ruth Bernstein; sisters, Rosa Lee, Nora, Mary Edith, Eula and Ruth; and brothers, Edgar, John Franklin “Frank” and William Woodrow.
He is survived by his wife of over 65 years, Irma Wolz Baker; sons, George Stanley Baker, Jr. and his wife, Urszula Emelia of New York and John Louis Baker and his wife, Debra of New York; daughter, Heidi Marie Griffin and her husband, Frank of Morganton; sons-in-law, Glenn Bernstein and John Simonetti; and grandchildren, Jeremy Simonetti, Jesse Baker, Michael Bernstein, Grace Simonetti, Jade Johnson, Karolina Baker and Mark Bernstein.
The family will receive friends from 7:00-9:00 p.m., Friday evening, September 28, 2012 at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton.
A private burial will be held at a later date at the Western Carolina State Veteran’s Cemetery in Black Mountain, NC.
