Mamie Elizabeth Ervin Erwin, affectionately known as “Nubby”, was born on February 15, 1929 to the late Will and Annie McDowell Ervin. She went home to be with the Lord on Sunday morning, April 30, 2017. She was 88 years old.
“Nubby” was a devoted lifetime member of Mission African Methodist Episcopal Church. She enjoyed teaching Bible Study, was a Steward, Sunday School Superintendent, President of the Senior Choir, was a member of the Trustee Board and a member of the Willing Workers Club. She was instrumental in the formation of the Ervin Family Singers. She organized and promoted singing programs.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. Erwin. In addition, her parents and eleven siblings, brothers, William Ervin, Woodrow Ervin, James Ervin, Thomas Ervin, and Harper Ervin and her sisters, Ilar Williams, Jessie Avery, Margaret Ervin, Annie Corpening, Susie Avery and Lucy Ervin also preceded her in death.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her beloved children, the Rev. Diane E. Conley (Ronald), Revelee Ervin, Cheryle Leary (Gilbert), Minister Robin Reed (Rev. Amos), Terri Erwin and Robert Erwin, Jr. (Tonya). “Nubby” loved her children and grandchildren and the relationship with each was always of deep concern. She was actively involved in each of their lives. Her love and pride was extended to her eleven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, to her sister-in-law Helen K. Ervin and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors and friends. She was also a foster grandmother to many at the Western Carolina Center.
“Nubby” worked in the Dietary Department of Grace Hospital and retired from Drexel Heritage as a Chair Caner. She attended Olive Hill High School where she played basketball for a championship team.
The family will receive friends at Kirksey Funeral Home, located at 406 Lenoir Road in Morganton on Friday, May 5, 2017 from 7:00 until 8:30 PM. A service celebrating her life will be held at Mission African Methodist Episcopal Church on Saturday, May 6, 2017, beginning at 1:00 PM. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
