Patrick Joseph “Joe” O’Toole, 88, passed away peacefully at the New York – Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital in Cortland, NY, on Sunday, December 31, 2017. Patrick was born on Verplanck Point, NY, September 11, 1929 to Patrick Joseph (Red) O’Toole and Lillian Conklin O’Toole.
Patrick graduated from Henry Hudson High School class of 1947. He was a member of the Buchanan Fire Department, reaching the rank of Second Lieutenant. An army veteran during the Korean War, he served in Camp Rucker, Alabama and Sendai, Japan. He was a Police Officer with the Peekskill and Buchanan Police Departments. He served as Detective and retired as Chief of Police for the Buchanan Police Department in 1982. He was a founding member of the Police Emerald Society and Co-Grand Marshall of the Buchanan St. Patrick’s Day Parade. He was a proud “Pointer” and loved the communities he served and protected. “Post retirement he also enjoyed “pushing the hot dog cart” on Washington Street, Peekskill.
In September of 1954, he married the love of his life, Carminda (Mindy Marques) O’Toole. He is survived by his wife of 63 years. Beloved father of Dennis O’Toole of Garrison, NY and Kathleen (O’Toole) and John Dale of Wells, NY. He was much loved by his grandchildren; Luke and Amber Dale of Lancaster, PA, Erin and Mark Darling of Wareham, MA, Tyler O’Toole of Bronx, NY and Paige O’Toole of Garrison, NY.
Patrick believed in serving and protecting. He had a faith in Christ and a deep love for his family and the communities he served. Joe and his family are extremely grateful for the superlative care of the staff at the New York Presbyterian Hospital Wound Care and Cardiology, Archcare at Home and the VA at Montrose. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to New York Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital.
Visitation will be held at the EDWARD F. CARTER FUNERAL HOME, 170 Kings Ferry Rd., Montrose, NY on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 from 5-8 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Thursday, January 4th at St. Christopher’s Church in Buchanan, NY. Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery in Cortlandt Manor, NY.
