Margaret M. Hughes

Born in the Bronx, New York, Peggy was one of seven children born to Alfred and Margaret (Rafferty) Lagan. She earned her undergraduate degree from Good Counsel College, matriculating to Hunter College where she earned her Master’s in education. She married Patrick Hughes in 1962; together they had four children: Peter (Ellen), Paul (Christine), Mary Clare Roeder (Marty), and Aileen Memoli (Matthew). She was predeceased by her husband in 1985, as well as her brothers Al, Jack, and Robert. She is survived by her children, grandchildren (Patrick, David, James, Isabella, Cara, Maggie, and Ella) as well as her sisters Sr. Anne Marie Lagan S.C., Maureen Lagan, Eileen Curran, sisters-in-law Joan Lagan and June Lagan, nieces, nephews, and many treasured friends.

Equally devoted to her faith and Irish heritage, she was proud to profess both. Peggy lived her Roman Catholicism as a daily communicant and Eucharistic Minister serving both her parish and a local Veterans Hospital. She was actively involved as the Catholic Action Officer for the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians (District 18 Peekskill). As a Catholic educator she was dedicated to academic excellence in her students as well as being keenly aware of her role in assisting in their faith formation. She encouraged all her students (children and grandchildren) to live a life of service.

Peggy loved her family, reading, and spending time with her friends. Generous, fun, and loyal, she will be greatly missed.

A visitation for Margaret will be held on Monday, August 30, 2021 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Edward F. Carter, 170 Kings Ferry Rd, Montrose, New York. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 31, 2021 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St Patrick's Church, 240 Eleventh St, Verplanck, New York 10596. Burial following the funeral mass will follow at St Patrick's Cemetery, Broadway, Verplanck, New York 10596.
