As a sergeant in the US Air Force, John served in Spangdahlem, Germany during the Vietnam era. Back in the US he completed his degree in urban planning at the University of Dayton, where he met and proposed to his future wife, Karen, who was there at a seminar while training as a specialist in neonatal respiratory therapy. They moved to New York where he worked for USIX Construction Management. They came to Croton in 1989.
He survived a devastating motorcycle crash in 2005 plus 2 years of rehabilitation, after which he created a beekeeping business and John Bernard Home Inspections and M.J. Crow Construction Management Inc., where he worked until 2025.
John had many friends in Croton from all walks of life who will hold private celebrations of his life. A kind and generous person, his last gift was organ donation.
Unable to say goodbye, his grieving family and friends suggest memorial donations in his name be made to his favorite charities: PBS, WGBO Jazz Radio or SPCA of Westchester.
