It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Istvan (Stephen) Kovacs, who died peacefully on January 3, 2025, at the age of 92. A beloved husband, father, and friend, he leaves behind a legacy of resilience and devotion to his family and faith.
Born in Hungary, Istvan was forced to flee his homeland in 1956 during the upheaval of the Hungarian Revolution. After a courageous escape from the oppressive communist regime, he arrived in the United States, where he found a new life and opportunity. Shortly after his arrival, Istvan met and married Johanna Kovacs in a ceremony at St. Stephen’s Roman Catholic Church in New York, a union that would last until her passing.
In the early 1970s, Istvan and Johanna settled in Croton-on-Hudson, NY, where they raised their two sons, Steven A. Kovacs and Peter L. Kovacs. Together, they built a life founded on hard work, love, and a deep sense of faith. Istvan worked with Johanna at the OysterBar in Grand Central Terminal, a place where his warm spirit and work ethic touched the lives of many.
He is survived by his two sons, Steven and Peter, who were the pride of his life. His legacy will live on through them and the many lives he touched over the years.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in his honor at St. Christopher’s Church in Buchanan, NY, on Friday, January 10, 2025, at 11:00 am. Cremation services be private.
