Edward F. Carter, 67, of Verplanck, died peacefully August 26, surrounded by his family. A lifelong area resident, he was born May 27, 1943 to Edward F. and Catherine Harding Carter. He was a graduate of Hendrick Hudson High School and the Simmons Institute. For many years, he owned and operated the Edward F. Carter Funeral Homes in Montrose and Croton, founded by his father in 1950’s. He retired in 1996.
Known for his dedication to the community, he was a life member of the Hendrick Hudson Lions Club, holding every office. He was a Past District Governor, a Melvin Jones Fellow and Robert J. Uplinger Award recipient. He was also a life member of the Montrose, Buchanan, and Verplanck Fire Departments, and member of the Croton Fire Department, the Peekskill Elks Lodge, and a founding member of the Cortlandt Community Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
He was a former councilman for the Town of Cortlandt, and a driving force behind the creation of the town’s Teen Center.
Ed will be remembered for teaching his children and grandchildren to never turn away from someone in need of help, and always give back to the community. He loved to host parties to be with his friends. His friends were such an integral part of his life, he referred to most of them as “brother”.
He loved spending time with his family, during weekly “Family Night” dinners with his famous “grandpa dogs”, boating, snowmobiling and golfing.
He had so many great friends, but his family is grateful especially to Ken & Judy Golden for nearly seven decades of loyal companionship.
He leaves his wife of 46 years, Patricia, son Edward T., and daughters Debra (James) Costello, Sandi (Steven) Clausen and Michelle Carter. He also leaves four adoring grandchildren, Rachael and Jamie Costello and Heather and Steven Clausen. He is also survived by his brother Richard D (Beth)., and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Family will receive friends at the Edward F. Carter Funeral Home, 170 Kings Ferry Road Montrose, on Saturday, Aug. 28 from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday Aug. 29 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday Aug. 30 at St. Patrick’s Church at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to the Hendrick Hudson Lions Club, P.O. Box 45 Montrose NY 10548, or the American Lung Association.
