battle with cancer, at the Palliative Care Unit of the Montreal General
Hospital on the morning of Saturday May 9, 2015, surrounded by
loved ones.
Born on July 11, 1947 in Sherbrooke, QC he was the eldest child of the
late Squadron Leader John R. Gilmore (RCAF) and Mary Gilmore (nee
Jackman). John grew up in the Bahamas and then in Scotland and was
educated at St Bede’s Preparatory School in Staffordshire and St
Joseph’s College, Dumfries (UK). He studied law at the University of
Edinburgh, graduating in 1968. He then entered the airline industry and
spent time with Canadian Pacific, Air Canada and Air Jamaica before
establishing himself as a consultant living and working in several
countries. His love of the sunshine and the beach had him travelling
around the world to many exotic destinations throughout his life;
although, he returned to live in Montreal in 2006 to care for his ailing
sister. In recent times, John was particularly proud to have been
involved in the rebirth of Eastern Airlines in the U.S.
A charming man, with wit and humour that prevailed over all, anyone
who knew John knew his love of storytelling. His keen intellect could get
him through any challenge and could captivate a room for hours. He is
survived by his beloved daughter Patricia, granddaughter Leila, and
son-in-law Patrick, all of Lachine; by his brother Bill, sister-in-law
Patricia, niece Christine, nephew John Jr. and by other members of his
extended family in Canada, the USA and Scotland. His family and
friends will for a long time remember his kindness, loyalty and
generosity of spirit.
Special thanks are due the Montreal General Hospital’s OMF, Oncology,
General Surgery and Palliative teams for their overwhelming medical
support and care over the past eight months.
A Funeral Service for family and friends will be held Friday May 15, 2015
at 11 a.m., visitation at 10 a.m., at the Collins Clarke MacGillivary White
Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, as a tribute to his lifelong and noble struggle with
addiction, donations can be made c/o Griffith Edwards Centre,
Addiction Unit of the MUHC, 1547 Pine Avenue West Montreal, Quebec
H3G 1B3, where he was counselled, and took pride in counselling others.
