Saturday, April 5, 1941, was a happy day in the lives of Iris Maxwell and Reggie Griffith, as their cute baby boy George Arlington (also known to many as “Buddy” and “Alvin”), was born in Dartmouth, British Guiana. Alvin's early years were spent in Dartmouth on the Essequibo Coast in British Guiana with his paternal grandmother, Henrietta Garnett, aunts, and uncles. However, at the age of 10 his mother took custody of him, moving him to live with her in Bagotsville, on the West Bank of Demerara also in British Guiana.
After attending Dartmouth and Bagotsville Primary schools respectively, he went on to become a Welder by trade and along with his older brother, Eldon, travelled to Wismar in Linden to work at Demba, Demerara Bauxite Company.
In 1962 Alvin migrated to London, England where he continued to work in his field and subsequently met his wife Maria Kildare in 1963. On March 21, 1964 Alvin said “I do” to the love of his life. Their union produced two sons – Paul and Mark. In 1970, Alvin left England and migrated to Canada with his family.
Alvin, an outspoken man, could be remembered for his long conversations about cricket and politics and the way he carried himself, as a savvy dresser…He was always on point.
After a period of illness, the Lord allowed this superb husband, father, grand-father, uncle, cousin, and very dear friend to rest from all pain and discomfort on November 18, 2022 whilst residing at Maimonides Donald Berman Nursing home in Montreal, Quebec.
Alvin leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife, Maria, sons, Paul, Mark; daughter-in-law, Izumi, grandchildren, Kaito and Aki. Siblings, Evelyn, George, Joycelyn, Mavis and several nieces, nephews, and friends.
Alvin is predeceased by siblings: Elvie, Eldon, Bonnie, Oslin, Fitz and Keith.
May his soul rest in peace!
