Frederic Rolland Mayer, known affectionately as Fred, passed away on July 13, 2024, in Montreal, Quebec after a long fight with cancer.
Born on July 11, 1946, to John Mayer and Alexina Lessard, Fred was predeceased by his parents. His memory will be forever held in the hearts of his surviving family: his wife Carole; his son, Jonathan, as well as many former and current Vanier colleagues as well as by thousands of his students Fred worked with for over twenty years.
Fred was a graduate of Sir George Williams earning his Bachelor of Science (with honours in mathematics) in 1974. He went on to earn his Master of Science under his thesis advisor John McNamee from Concordia in 1980. His career as a teacher was marked by his dedication to enhancing the lives of his students from tutoring to creating programs.
Fred's hobbies were as rich and varied as his professional life. As well as math he had a keen interest in history in general and the history of the first and second wars and that of aviation in particular. His passion for model planes was more than a pastime; it was an art form, with countless hours spent creating intricate recreations of aircraft.
We are in the process of arranging their funeral and will announce the details soon.
