Douglas John Hall

Douglas John Hall passed away peacefully, surrounded by his children and grandchildren, at the age of 97, April 10 2025 in Montréal. He had lived a long and fruitful life. From an early age, Douglas loved the world of music, and remained an accomplished pianist throughout his life.

Douglas married the late Rhoda Catherine Palfrey, a fellow Canadian and graduate student at Columbia University, in 1960 at Riverside Church, New York City. He will be dearly missed by their four children : Kate (Jacques) Christopher (Marie-Claude) Sara (Lloyd) and Lucy (Arne) and eight grandchildren : Sophia, Olivier, Kyle, Jakob, Rebekka, Samuel, Daniel and Anne-Sophie.

He is also survived by his two remaining brothers : Richard Hall (Woodstock Ont) and Delbert Hall.

Douglas John Hall was one of North America's leading theologians. He is known for bringing a uniquely Canadian approach to his field.

Professor Emeritus at McGill University's Faculty of Religious Studies, he was a prolific author most celebrated for a three-volume series in which he examines Christian beliefs in light of the North American cultural and historical experience.

He has also written popular books about Christianity for a wider audience.

Passionate about social justice and environmental ethics, he was a sought-after guest speaker and lecturer in Canada and abroad.

The author of over 30 published works, including the three-volume Systematic theology, and numerous articles, Hall lectured widely in the United States and Canada during the period 1974–2010.

He was Gastprofessor at the University of Siegen, Germany, in 1980; Visiting Scholar at Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan, in 1989; Professor of Theology at the Melanchthon Institute of Houston, Texas, in 1999; member of the Campbell Seminar on the Future of the Church at Columbia Seminary of Decatur, Georgia, in 2000; Distinguished Visiting Professor at Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Columbus, Ohio, in 2001; Theologian-in-Residence, Church of the Crossroads in Honolulu, Hawaii (2003); and Theologian-in-Residence, International Protestant Church in Vienna (2003).

Hall was an active participant in many international consultations including the World Convocation of the World Council of Churches (WCC) in Seoul, South Korea, 1990, and the UN AIDS theological symposium in Namibia (2003). He served on theological committees of the WCC and the World Alliance of Reformed Churches, the United Church of Canada, the National Council of Churches USA, et al.

He was a proud Member of the Order of Canada (C.M.)

He was named Distinguished Alumnus of Union Theological Seminary, and was awarded The Joseph Sittler Medal for Leadership in Theology, Trinity Seminary (Columbus) – 2002

He was awarded Three Book of the Year awards by the Academy of Parish Clergy.

And finally, he had been honoured with ten Honorary Doctorates.

A memorial service will be held towards the end of June 2025.

Following that service, his ashes will placed next to those of his darling wife Rhoda in the lovely cemetery in Algoma Mills Ontario.

Il manquera beaucoup à ses quatre enfants : Kate (Jacques), Christopher (Marie-Claude), Sara (Lloyd) et Lucy (Arne), ainsi qu'à leurs huit petits-enfants : Sophia, Olivier, Kyle, Jakob, Rebekka, Samuel, Daniel et Anne-Sophie.

Il laisse également dans le deuil ses deux frères : Richard Hall (Woodstock, Ontario) et Delbert Hall.

Douglas John Hall était l'un des théologiens les plus éminents d'Amérique du Nord. Il est reconnu pour son approche typiquement canadienne de son domaine.

Professeur émérite à la Faculté des sciences religieuses de l'Université McGill. Il était un auteur prolifique, surtout reconnu pour une série de trois volumes dans laquelle il examine les croyances chrétiennes à la lumière de l'expérience culturelle et historique nord-américaine.

Il a également écrit des ouvrages de vulgarisation sur le christianisme destinés à un public plus large.

Passionné de justice sociale et d'éthique environnementale, il était un conférencier invité et un conférencier recherché au Canada et à l'étranger.

Auteur de plus de 30 ouvrages publiés, dont l'ouvrage en trois volumes « Théologie systématique », et de nombreux articles, Hall a donné de nombreuses conférences aux États-Unis et au Canada entre 1974 et 2010.

Il a été professeur invité à l'Université de Siegen, en Allemagne, en 1980 ; chercheur invité à l'Université Doshisha de Kyoto, au Japon, en 1989 ; professeur de théologie à l'Institut Melanchthon de Houston, au Texas, en 1999 ; membre du séminaire Campbell sur l'avenir de l'Église au séminaire Columbia de Decatur, en Géorgie, en 2000 ; professeur invité distingué au séminaire luthérien Trinity de Columbus, dans l'Ohio, en 2001 ; théologien résident à l'Église des Carrefours d'Honolulu, à Hawaï (2003) ; et théologien résident à l'Église protestante internationale de Vienne (2003).

Hall a participé activement à de nombreuses consultations internationales, notamment à la Convocation mondiale du Conseil œcuménique des Églises (COE) à Séoul, en Corée du Sud, en 1990, et au symposium théologique de l'ONUSIDA en Namibie (2003). Il a siégé aux comités théologiques du COE, de l'Alliance réformée mondiale, de l'Église unie du Canada, du Conseil national des Églises des États-Unis, etc.

Il était fier d'être membre de l'Ordre du Canada (C.M.).

Il a été nommé "Ancien élève distingué" du Union Theological Seminary NY, et a reçu la médaille Joseph Sittler pour son leadership en théologie du Séminaire Trinity (Columbus) en 2002.

Il a reçu trois prix du Livre de l'année de l'Academy of Parish Clergy.

Il a également reçu dix doctorats honorifiques.

Une cérémonie commémorative aura lieu vers la fin juin 2025.

Après cette cérémonie, ses cendres seront déposées à côté de celles de sa chère épouse Rhoda dans le charmant cimetière d'Algoma Mills, en Ontario.
