Highlights of Aurèle's life and family tribute:
Aurèle was born on December 9, 1931 in the La Petite-Patrie district of Montreal, he was the 13th of 16 children of Rodolphe Ménard and Irène Brault. Sadly from 1917 to 1937, 8 of his 15 siblings died before reaching the age of 2. In 1938 his father, an awning dealer, moved to Peterborough, Ontario with all his family (except Marguerite, his older sister, married the previous year). Around the age of 16, he began working for the Canadian National, telegraph section, first in Peterborough, briefly in Toronto and in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu around 1949.
In 1950 he met his beautiful Delphine in St-Jacques, near Joliette, whom he married on September 11, 1954. They settled in St-Jean where Carole and André were born. Around 1959 the family moved to Montreal, then to Verdun where Réjean and Patrice were born. In 1966 he left his job at the CNR to begin a new career at Transport Canada (TC), first as a Weather Communicator at Dorval Airport and moved to Ville St-Laurent the same year. In 1968 with the new technologies of the time, his position in Dorval was abolished. He accepted a position at Frobisher Bay (now Iqaluit, Nunavut) for 2 years. In 1970, his post at Frobisher was also abolished but accepted the job of clerk for the TAM Frobisher (Telecom Area Manager).
In early 1971, after winning a competition of Purchasing Clerk at the TC Regional Office in Dorval, the family returned to Québec and later in July he purchased his first house in Pierrefonds. He then held several administrative positions in the Regional Office and in 1974 he was promoted with positions at Dorval Airport’s Operations, in 1976 he held the position of Airport Duty Manager. In the early 1980s, tired of shift work, he accepted a transfer to the Regional Office as a Regional Planning Officer, a position he held until the position was cut in 1987 and decided to retire.
Between 1974 and 1987 he acquired or rented houses in Ville LaSalle, Pierrefonds, Dollard-des-Ormeaux and Pincourt. In the early 1990s, he bought his last house in Napierville (he loved that house..). To get closer to services (including hospitals), in the early 2000s, he moved to an apartment in St-Luc near St-Jean-sur-Richelieu and in 2009 and until the death of his beloved Delphine in January 2016, he returned to Ville LaSalle to get closer to the family,. Subsequently he lived in residences for seniors at Tours Angrignon (LaSalle) then Résidence Maywood (Pointe- Claire) until March 2021. Finally, he resided at the West Island CHSLD in Pierrefonds.
The 2 years spent in Frobisher Bay in 1969-70 were a turning point in his life and the whole family, it was an extraordinary experience for all to live in an arctic village, very advantageous on the financial side and that the 4 children have was able to learn English, which has served them well all their lives.
Dad was a hardworking man, intelligent and devoted to his family. Passionate about history, politics, astronomy and music (but as he said only "real music" not today's “bang-bang” or “noise” ...). In the 1980s-90s he was a drummer in a Scottish and military style band, practiced with his quieter drum until recently.
Everyone who knew him will remember his eternal sense of humor, whether with family, friends or work colleagues.
He adored his children and grandchildren and was always available and generous to them. The grandchildren in turn liked to see him because they found him so interesting and often very funny, they will keep fond memories of their grandpa.
We will miss you dearly dad, but have no fear, all of these beautiful childhood and family memories will remain engraved in our hearts forever. We love you daddy, rest now, it's well deserved.
