He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1965 and served in Vietnam as a photographic interpreter for recon. He married G. Ruth Carr in August 1969 in the United Kingdom. Eventually stationed in Montgomery, he retired from the USAF there in 1985 as a Master Sergeant. His Computer Science career continued with employment at Max Federal Credit Union, a degree from Auburn University Montgomery, and later as a programmer for the State of Alabama from which he retired.
William is preceded in death by both parents and Ruth Irving, his wife of 36 years. He is survived by his son, John Irving, his daughter, Kathyrn Willson (Irving) and son-in-law Matt Willson, by his siblings and their spouses Robert and Leslie Irving, Jeanne and Hector Angel, Bruce and Pym Irving, and Kenneth and Janlee Irving, and sister in law Hannah Irving, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was kind and generous and didn't know the word "stranger," happily talking to anyone and everyone. An avid hunter and outdoorsman, he was also a fan of sports including baseball and both college and professional football. He was particularly fond of his hometown teams the Patriots and the Red Sox and adopted the Auburn Tigers as his favorite college team. He loved to travel with and to family and friends, happy to drive any distance to see them. He is greatly missed.
