William L. Armstead, Jr. (84) went peacefully to be with the Lord on May 29, 2020 from his home in Montgomery. He was a loving husband, Daddy, PawPaw and friend. Because he was so endearing to everyone he met, most folks called him Pop, especially his beloved friends at Hog Rock Café’. Pop was born on April 6, 1936 in Andalusia, Alabama to Atress Cauley Armstead and William Leonard Armstead. He was the youngest of six children with his closest sibling being 7 years older.
Pop spent 4 years in the United States Air Force where he installed and repaired radio towers for communications. He was stationed stateside in Ogdon, Utah, and his foreign post was Okinawa, Japan.
After leaving military service, Pop became an electrician under the mentorship of his brother-in-law, Edna Worthington. Once trained and experienced, he began to work construction and traveled for work in Georgia, New York, Louisiana, Ohio, and Texas. His favorite place to be was at home with his family, so naturally he preferred the work in Alabama. Given his leadership skills and personality he was often assigned the role of foreman. He was both skilled and meticulous in his work.
Pop was a member of Chisholm Baptist Church and was active in the community for many years. He coached Little League Baseball and Girls’ Softball on the Chisholm fields where he made a huge impact on the lives of many young men and women. He was a fun-loving person with a wonderful sense of humor and joy to be around.
