Warren Robert Mitchell, 94, a resident of Montgomery, Alabama, passed away on Sunday, January 29,2023. A visitation will be held on Friday, February 3, 2023, from 9:30 a.m.-10 a.m. at White Chapel-Greenwood Funeral Home, 909 Lincoln Rd., Montgomery, Alabama 36109.
Following the visitation will be a military honor ceremony graveside at 12:30 p.m. at the Alabama National Cemetery, 3133 Highway 119, Montevallo, AL 35115.
He was a Gunnery Sargent in the U.S. Marine Corps, retired, made his final journey, and was reunited with his wife, Winifred, of 65 years.
He was born in Baltimore, Maryland. Warren very proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. When he retired, he joined the United States Marine Corps Reserve in Baltimore in 1948. He was assigned to the Demolition section and later to Mapping and Survey.
In 1950 he was activated and sent to Korea. He spent 13 months there attached to the 1st Engineers, 1stMarDiv., and saw action in November 1950 at Wonsan Landing and later at Chosin Reservoir. He returned home Christmas Eve, 1951, with the last 12 reservists of the original battalion. He served four months at Quantico training aids. He then rejoined the 1st Engr Bn in 1952. Among his numerous decorations are the Presidential Unit Citation (twice awarded), Korean Service Medal, five battle stars, and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation.
Among his other accomplishments, he attended Loyola University and received his master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University. He was Commander of the Civil Air Patrol Squadron at Maxwell Air Force Base. He was also Commander of the Marine Corps League.
He was loved by everyone he met. He enjoyed being with his friends and family and loved a good beer.
Mr. Mitchell was preceded in death by his mother, Carrie Mitchell, beloved wife, Winifred Mitchell, and son-in-law Michael Payne.
He is survived by his only daughter Terri Mitchell; nieces, Rose Freval, (Raoul) Jan Seymour, Patricia LaVie, (Jon) Jennifer Thompkins (Kelvin). Nephews Morley Fretch (LeMar), John Fretch (Sherrie), Jeff Seymour.
Much gratitude goes to his long-time caregivers, Lydia Nations, Johnnie Rivers, Amanda Cousino, Erika Dale, Georgia Taylor, and Stephanie Ellis. A special thank you to his wonderful hospice nurse Annmarie Harley. I could not have managed without these remarkable women.
