Walter Greer Nanney, Jr, age 96, a longtime resident of Montgomery, AL died peacefully at his home on Thursday, November 30, 2023 after a brief illness.
Walter was born to Walter Greer Nanney, Sr. and Lottie Stevens Nanney in Jackson, TN on June 28,1927. He graduated from Okolona High School in Okolona, MS in 1945 and then served as Seamon First Class with the Naval Service of the United States until his honorable discharge on July 29, 1946. He married Donna West Nanney, his loving wife of 74 years, on September 2, 1949 and graduated from Mississippi State College for Civil Engineering in 1950.
Walter had a successful career in the construction industry that began by working with the Mississippi State Highway Department and later included joining Blount International Ltd. in 1959 and was promoted to Vice President of Operations, Mercury Division, in 1978. In 1983 he joined Caddell Construction Co., Inc. at its formation in Montgomery and served as Vice President of Operations until his retirement in 1994.
A longtime member of Frazer Church, Walter served generously as leader of the ‘Roll Up Your Sleeves’ program for the handicap as well as other organizations such as 'Meals on Wheels’. He enjoyed Mississippi State sports, gardening, hunting, fishing and traveling around the world with some of his closest friends.
He was preceded in death by his two sisters, one brother, one daughter, Linda Diane Nanney, and two great granddaughters Kinsley Ann-Marie Snowden-Nanney and Olivia Greer Spurlin.
Survivors include his wife Donna West Nanney, his daughter, Suzanne Nanney Spurlin of Montgomery, son Robert Walter Nanney (Jeri) of Senatobia, MS, five grandchildren- Jeff Spurlin, Chad Spurlin, Mark Spurlin (Jessica), Benjamin Nanney (Hali), and Holly Nanney and eight great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, December 7, 2023 at 10:00 at Leak Memory Chapel, Montgomery. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 with Rev. John Ed Mathison officiating. Burial service to follow in Greenwood Cemetery with immediate family and close friends.
