Velita McFarland

Nancy Velita Smith McFarland passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, October 26, 2023. Velita was born in Frink, Florida, on January 2, 1928. In 1947, Velita married Wilson Carlo (W.C) McFarland and moved to Montgomery, Alabama. They met while he and her brother were serving in the Navy during WWII. They were married for 47 wonderful years. She was preceded in death by her husband, W.C. McFarland, Montgomery, AL, her parents John Dewey and Hettie Smith, her brothers George Dewey Smith and J.B. Smith and her sister Estelle Smith Jones all of Clarksville, Florida.

Velita was a dedicated member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church for over 70 years and was a member of the choir for over 61 years. She loved the Lord and would share with anyone she met that she was a “F.R.O.G.”, (Fully Relying on God). Velita retired with over 20 years of service from the Montgomery Police Department as a Police Lady. She loved life and she loved to win as she excelled at anything she did. She was athletic and lettered in basketball while in high school. She won many awards in softball, bowling, and playing in rook tournaments. She will always be remembered as a kind, sweet and loving lady with a smile for everyone.

She deeply loved her family and would do anything for them. She leaves behind her son Randy (Shelia) McFarland of Montgomery, AL; her son Sidney McFarland of Montgomery, AL; grandchildren Christy (Michael) McFarland Waddell; Brett (Brittany) McFarland; T.J. (Jolena) McFarland, Trent (Wendy) McFarland, Traci (Jesse) Shambo, Trevor (Ann) McFarland. She loved to be called “Gigi” by her 16 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Thursday, November 2, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Leak Memory Chapel, 945 Lincoln Road, Montgomery, AL 36109, followed by a Celebration of Life Chapel service starting at 11:00 AM. The burial service will follow immediately at Greenwood Cemetery.
