Mrs. Stella Simpson Bishop Russell, sadly passed away on February 8, at the age of 92. A graveside service will be Saturday, February 10 at Alabama Heritage Cemetery in Montgomery. Born and raised in Chester, South Carolina. She was next to the youngest of four girls.
After moving to Rock Hill, she attended and graduated from Rock Hill High School. There she was a star basketball player and head majorette.
After school she went to Montgomery, Alabama to help her expectant sister through her pregnancy.
There she met her future husband and the love of her life, Byron Charles Russell.
They were married for 56 years and had two children.
Ms. Russell has five grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Byron Charles Russell Sr., her parents, Charlie Brown Bishop and Dora Weaver Bishop, and her three sisters, Carrie Mae Bishop Whitler, Margaret Bishop Gates, and Jean Bishop Wilson.
She is survived by her two children, Byron Charles Russell, Jr. (Kelly) of John’s Creek, GA, Deborah Russell Fletcher (Chuck) of Montgomery, AL, five grandchildren, Charles Tennant Fletcher, III (Leigh) of Vestavia Hills, AL, Simpson Elizabeth Fletcher Hutto (Zack) of Atlanta, GA, Rebecca Ashley Russell Davis (Steve) of Suwanee, GA, Byron Charles Russell, III “Tripp” (Maggie) of Woodstock, GA, Hunter Sim Russell (Paige) of Hanahan, SC and thirteen great grandchildren, Bennett Douglas Fletcher, Charles Tennant Fletcher,IV, Stella Simpson Hutto, Robert Crosby Hutto, Tyler Davis, Colt Davis, Shelby Davis, Ryder Russell, Levi Russell, Ruby Russell, Charlie Russell, Jaxon Russell, and Wyatt Russell.
She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Ms. Russell was a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church, a kindergarten teacher for the City of Montgomery, an avid gardener/ floral designer, who loved to draw and write poetry.
But above all she was the most amazing person and mother. A woman of great wisdom, character, love for her family, and tenacity. One of the most beautiful people…both inside and out, who never looked her age. We were all blessed to be in her presence, to have had her as our mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
She will be missed everyday… every single day. The world will not ever be as bright without her.
