Sara Ann Johnson, 90, a resident of Montgomery, died peacefully on March 23, 2017, after a brief illness. Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at 11:30 am at Leak Memory Chapel. She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph (Joe) Johnson and her son Joseph Victor Johnson.
Sara Ann was born in West Point, Georgia to Roy Freeman and Sadie Clemm Freeman. Sara Ann was the youngest of 4 children; she was also preceded in death by her sisters, Margie Freeman Tillery and Mary Freeman Spinks and her brother, Lewis Freeman.
Sara Ann and her sisters all graduated from Business College in LaGrange. She met her husband Joe and moved to his hometown of Montgomery in 1952 and they started their family in 1954 when Victor was born. Sara Ann started and built a successful market research firm, Sara Ann Johnson Research, in the early 1960’s. She grew the business and made many wonderful friends and associates through the 70’s and 80’s. She retired in the early 2000’s.
Joe and Sara Ann joined Dalraida United Methodist Church in the late 1950’s and enjoyed that wonderful association for the rest of their lives.
Sara Ann, in her middle age, enjoyed an extensive group of loyal friends who were committed to helping each other for over 20 years. Other than working with these friends, Sara Ann enjoyed Gardening, reading, working crosswords puzzles and all forms of “gaming” with Joe. Being a child of the depression in rural Georgia, Sara Ann had an ingrained sense of self sufficiency and independence.
She is survived by her son Arthur Shane Johnson of Atlanta, GA. She is also survived by her nephew T. Lewis Tillery (Nicki) of Mobile and West Point and Cousin Virginia Ann Hoffman (Harold, Sr.) of Covington, Ga.
Active pallbearers will be Lewis Tiller, Mike Cason, Kenny Pierce, Judd Welch, Bill Willard and Tom Rayon. Honorary pallbearer will be John Weiss. Other special friends include Polly Graham, of Birmingham, Doris Winborn, Montgomery and Kathleen Wilkowski, Montgomery. The family wishes to thank Sara Ann’s special care givers, Cassandra Barnes, Tracey Wilson, La Sonya Mitchell and La Sharn Williams.
Visitation will be held from 10:00am to 11:30am on Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at Leak Memory Chapel with service to follow, graveside will be held at Greenwood Serenity Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Dalraida United Methodist Church, 3817 Atlanta Highway, Montgomery, Al 36109.
