Sally Jo (Gidley) Mauldin departed this life on January 26, 2021 due to complications from dementia and Covid-19. She was 92 years old. Sally was born on March 25, 1928 in Hokes Bluff, Al. She graduated from Hokes Bluff High School in 1946.
Sally Jo was preceded in death by her parents James Collie Gidley and Lu Gener (Turner) Gidley, sister Louise (Lester) DeLoach and brother James Carl (Mary) Gidley all of Hokes Bluff, and her longtime close friend Elizabeth (Bud) Hayes.
She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband of 61 years James Harold Mauldin, originally of Flat Rock, Al. After courting for 5 years and after his service in the Korean War, Sally and Harold were married on November 15, 1952. The couple resided in Hokes Bluff, Birmingham and Pinson, Alabama. They loved to go camping, try new recipes, and playing games with their children.
Harold retired from Hayes International in Birmingham and Sally retired from Liberty Supermarket. Afterwards they gardened, made quilts, other crafts, woodwork, and also drove a transport truck all over the country. They later returned to Hokes Bluff for 13 years before moving in 2004 to Montgomery, Alabama.
For the last 40 years of her life, Ms. Sally was known to her family and loved ones as “Memaw”.
Memaw loved her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her numerous “adopted” young’uns. She enjoyed making sausage biscuits on Sunday mornings and baking pound cakes to give as gifts. She could crochet, knit, embroidery, and loved to make quilts for her family and friends.
Sally is survived by her Daughters: Denise (Harry) Howe of Marion, Virginia; Teresa (Douglas) Dearth of Montgomery, Alabama; Grandchildren: William (Vanessa) Howe, Amanda (Tim) Kelley, Ashley Dearth (Jeremy Strickland), and Matthew Dearth; Great Grandchildren: Caleb Dearth, Lainey Newman, and Laurel Kelley; Cousins: Donna (Jimmie) and Megan Edgeworth, Donaleen and Cat Marbut and their families; “Adopted” family Teresa and Nicole Makinney, Mark (Judy) Hayes, Tommy (Michelle) Hayes, Brady Newman, Gary Rogers, Ellie Cox, Reba Patterson, Betty Brown, Lavada Chapman and their families; also Friends from Eastdale Estates, and many friends and family from the Cullman, Hokes Bluff and Pinson, Alabama areas.
Special thanks to the congregation of Perry Hill Road Baptist Church, Country Cottages Dementia Care, Wetumpka Health and Rehab, Baptist Medical Center South and Baptist Health Care Foundation (Hospice) caregivers for their love, devotion and guidance.
Funeral services will be held at Leak Memory Chapel, date and time to be announced. A private graveside service will be held at The New Bethel Cemetery in Hokes Bluff, Alabama with Rev. Harry Howe officiating.
