Richard Paul Hodges of Montgomery, Alabama, died at his home on November 13, 2023, surrounded by family. He was born December 30, 1932, in New Orleans, Louisiana, the youngest son of the late Evelyn Livaudais Hodges and William Henry Hodges. He is survived by his seven children: Richard Paul Hodges Jr. (Karla), Sally Hodges Ryan, Michael McCloskey Hodges (Heather), Patrick Evans Hodges, Elizabeth Hodges Wilson, Catherine Hodges Edwards (Matt) and Donald Stephen Hodges (Melissa). “Pops” leaves behind 17 beloved grandchildren: Paul Hodges III, William Ray Abner III, John Hodges Ryan, Charles Michael Ryan, Patrick William Ryan, Michael McCloskey Hodges Jr., Hunter James Hodges, Patrick Evans Hodges Jr., William Stewart McKenzie Hodges, Jonathan Lowry Wilson Jr., Richard Austin Wilson, Ashley Elizabeth Wilson, Cade Christopher Edwards, Chase Cobern Edwards, Donald Stephen Hodges Jr., Hogan Patrick Hodges, Hannah Louise Hodges; and many cherished nieces and nephews.
Dick graduated from Ridgewood Preparatory High School in New Orleans and Louisiana State University, where he was a proud member of Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. He married Sally Evans in 1959 and moved to Montgomery, AL, where they raised their family and lived a faith-filled life together for 51 years. Dick worked in Sales for the family business, Hodges Stockyards for 25+ years, then became a Warehousing Executive, as the industry changed and Hodges Warehouses & Logistics was created.
Dick touched many lives and will be remembered fondly for his zest for life, charm, warmth and positive disposition. Those who knew him well remarked that he was the ‘quintessential Southern Gentleman,’ sported his statement bow-tie, offered a stern handshake and had a fierce commitment to his faith. He was a member of Saint Peter Catholic Church. He was an ardent supporter of many causes over the years, with those closest to his heart being Catholic Charities, Montgomery Catholic Preparatory High School, Alabama Cattlemen’s Association, Rotary, Master Gardeners and many others Montgomery philanthropic organizations.
Dick loved his children, grandchildren, nieces & nephews and was known fondly as “Pops.” He rarely missed a sporting event, school play, wedding, baptism or graduation. He had a tradition of serenading special couples at their Rehearsal Dinners, which became an “Uncle Dick” tradition.
He was proceeded in death by his wife(s): Sally Evans Hodges (2010) and Carol Brewbaker Hodges (2018). Sisters and their husbands; Evelyn H. Gordon (Miller), Marian H. Wallis (Floyd), Joyce H. de la Houssaye (Felix), Gail H. Tranchin (Gerry), Beverly H. Davis (Frank “Happy”); by his brothers and their wives; William "Billy" Hodges (Joy Nalty), Roy Hodges (Melissa McGehee), Jack Hodges (Tedie Meade).
