Rebecca Brown was born on January 6, 1937, in Montgomery, Alabama. She was the eldest daughter of the late Jimmy Brown, Sr. and Elizabeth Ann Asberry. Rebecca received her wings on February 18, 2023. Rebecca accepted Christ at a young age. She served the Beulah Baptist Church family in several ministries over her 70+ years of membership including the choir, Sunday school teacher, Usher Board, Bible Camp volunteer and numerous activities around the church until her health declined.
Rebecca graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1954. She received a bachelor’s degree from Alabama State University and received two master’s degree from Troy State University. She also received a master’s degree in art from University of Alabama.
Rebecca met and married her life partner Charles E. Flute, Sr. on March 19, 1957. She lovingly supported her husband during his Air Force career. They were blessed to have two daughters and a son.
Rebecca was involved in numerous activities in the community including participation in the Civil Rights Movement and an extra in the movie “The Long Walk Home.” She enjoyed art, crafts and gardening. She was an excellent seamstress both designing and hand-making clothing for her family and friends.
A special joy in her life was teaching. She spent 37 years in the Elmore County School district pouring her passion and talents into hundreds of students in the midst of raising a family and acquiring a master’s degree.
Rebecca was an intelligent, vibrant woman who helped anyone who asked. She opened her home and her heart to those in need. Rebecca’s life blessed many and her presence will be sadly missed. Rebecca was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. Flute, Sr., her granddaughter Rachael George and three brothers Arthur Asberry, Jimmy Brown, Jr. and Johnny Brown, Sr.
She leaves to mourn her three children Dianne Flute George, Hoover, Alabama, Karen Williams, Lynn, Massachusetts and Charles (Daphne) Flute, Wylie, Texas. Four grandchildren, Deahanna (Manderia Gene) Silmon, Hoover, Alabama, Steven (Lee Hong) Williams, Charles Flute III and Katrina Flute. Rebecca cherished her 3 great-grandchildren Aniyah, Malachi and Devin, three sisters Ann McCorvey (Woodrow), Clemson, South Carolina, Julia Freeman, Anchorage, Alaska, and Delores Brown Mills, Montgomery, Alabama as well as three brothers Timothy Brown, Sr., Montgomery, Alabama, Larry Brown, Sr. (Carolyn) Millbrook, Alabama and William Brown, Sr. (Doretha), Montgomery, Alabama. She leaves to cherish a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
